"We are all designers of World Health" - Leland Kaiser
Associate Principal | National Healthcare Design Leader, HED
Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Public Health, Massachusetts Institute for Technology
This presentation will strongly advocate for a shift in mindset to consider Architects & Designers as Public Health Professionals. From a person who designs buildings and advises in their construction to a person who designs and guides a plan or undertaking. We believe as Architects we can design plans that reach beyond the design of buildings, plans that allow us to envision connections & mutually supportive & sustainable organizations that have never been seen before. Ideas that destroy the silos that have created our current state & imagine a future state that allows equitable access to health for all. Evidence continues to emerge that supports the potential positive impact that the built environment can have on wellbeing. It has been said that "Design is not neutral"…it either contributes in a positive or negative way to our health. This presentation will identify the direct relationship between Design, Public Health, Care Delivery, & the built environment.
- Understand the juxtaposition between the current state with the proposed changing mindset.
- Understand how design has a direct impact on public health.
- Understand how design has a direct impact on clinical outcomes and the experience of patients and providers
- Understand how design interventions can be embedded and become the basis for our Policies, Programs and our Projects
