Maria Mercedes Zampini is a native El Pasoan. She completed both her Bachelors in Business Administration and Masters in Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso. She is proud to say that the high quality education she received at the University of Texas at El Paso has afforded her the opportunity to stay in El Paso and give back to the community in which she grew up in. Being able to have a personal impact on the delivery of healthcare in the El Paso Community has always been a professional goal, the first step was a solid foundation which was accomplished through her experience at UTEP. Maria joined the University Medical Center team over twenty years ago. She currently holds the position of Chief Operating Officer. As Chief Operating Officer for the University Medical Center she is responsible for all facility renovation and construction projects, real estate acquisitions and transactions, Neighborhood Health Clinic operations, Ancillary (Rehabilitative Services, Pharmacy, Imaging, Regional Laboratory, Respiratory), Perioperative Services and Cath Labs, as well as the Support ( Facilities and Maintenance, Environmental Services, Guest Services/Security, Safety, Food Services) Departments. She has completed over $500M in construction projects over the past ten years as well as opened several new center sites. Her most current project is the $152M Bond Project that will expand UMC’s outpatient system by providing El Pasoans with increased access to providers. The project includes the opening of two new large Neighborhood Health Centers that include Primary and Specialty Care, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Imaging, Rehabilitative Services as well as community conference centers for increased patient education. Each Center will see over 50,000 patient visits and bring in over 125 employee jobs per site. The project also includes the renovation of four floors in the UMC main campus as well as bringing new Imaging Equipment, a Neuro Interventional Laboratory, a Da Vinci Robotic System, as well as other state of the art equipment projects.
