The Kayenta Health Center embodies Wellness on multiple levels & couples traditional cultural perspectives of healing with current wellness trends. The hospital serves the local Diné community, integrating the community’s significant cultural perspective of “Hozho iina”, translated as “balanced and good life”, and providing a spectrum of outpatient & inpatient care. To support the Indian Health Service’s mission to keep people healthy rather than focusing on disease treatment, the Wellness Center, community health, physical therapy & health education functions are located at the main entrance. This placement contradicts the perceived hierarchy of medicine and inpatient care, and instead, emphasizes cultural traditions and current trends & theories of healthcare that put Wellness first, emphasize preventative care & view staying healthy as the first line of defense. Learn how a cultural understanding of wellness combined with state-of-the-art healthcare is affecting patient outcomes.

1. Learn about Indian Health Service’s healthcare initiative.
2. Evaluate how services are accommodated in the building and how they are improving outcomes.
3. Recognize how this facility responds to the culture of the Diné population.
4. Understand ancient healthcare and wellness traditions and how they coincide with the industry's current thinking about wellness.
