Community EDs face the challenge of serving patients with a wide range of conditions requiring specialty care with a smaller budget than large urban hospitals. Similarly, freestanding EDs are becoming a common method of urban hospitals reaching out of their normal service areas to serve smaller communities. This session will address challenges of providing high quality emergency care to smaller communities and how two different systems addressed these problems. In one case, this involved an ED addition project at a community hospital for Baystate Health in Palmer, Massachusetts. In the second example, Halifax Health of Daytona Beach, Florida reached out of their normal service area to construct a freestanding ED (with plans to transition this to a full hospital in the future).
1. Identify the range of specialized patient care spaces to build while still considering budget in a Suburban ED addition project.
2. Discover operational efficiencies to improve patient and staff experience in a suburban ED environment.
3. Understand how to provide better clinical care and convenience outside of a healthcare system’s typical service area.
4. Learn to think and plan to transition a freestanding ED to a hospital while serving a new community.
