MOST INNOVATIVE & ARCHITECTS CHOICE
Interactive Prep/Recovery bay by Philips

Philips Ambient Experience is an approach to clinical environment design aimed at improving the patient and staff experience. Implemented in over 1000 sites around the world, it is based on years of design research and collaboration. The portfolio of solutions contributes to a positive, engaging environment to benefit quality of care. The new overhead canopy was developed to create a defined patient zone while providing a tunable recuperative experience. The Philips Large Luminous Surface overhead panels contain LED lighting linked to seventeen video theme options. These calming themes have been selected to enhance recovery and provide positive distraction while also allowing for personalization by ranging from pediatric whimsical themes to calming nature scenes. The ceiling panels themes are also linked to colored lighting selections that surround the perimeter of the canopy to provide a soft glow and lighting option for the bay. Exam and reading lighting are also incorporated in the ceiling. User interface was designed by Philips for an iPad application allowing the patient to control all of the room lighting and themes while a wall switch allows staff to override the settings should emergent situations arise.

GEORGE PRESSLER UNDER 40 AWARD
Kara Freihoefer with HGA

As a Senior Research Associate at HGA Architects and Engineers, Kara Freihoefer, PhD, CID, EDAC, LEED ID+C, has built a disciplined approach to practice-based research that enhances the firm’s healthcare design and planning processes. In a rapidly changing healthcare industry, research is becoming a necessary tool to quantify how design decisions impact patient and staff outcomes. Her research has been centered on development of a toolkit, which consists of validated methods for data collection that can be implemented during various phases of design—pre-design, pre-occupancy, and/or post-occupancy. As a result, the data and findings inform the design team to scientifically plan healthcare facilities with evidence-based design (EBD) concepts.
